September 20th Celebrated Birthdays Carleton Ellis – 1875 The prolific inventor patented more than 700 inventions and is credited with a long list of successful creations. As a chemist, plastic and petroleum became his medium. One of his most notable contributions was the development of margarine. Upton Sinclair – 1878 Best known for his novel The Jungle, Sinclair would later earn a Pulitzer Prize for his work, Dragon’s Teeth.Ward is best known for producing animated series featuring Rocky & Bullwinkle, Dudley Do-Right, Peabody and Sherman among others. Dorothy Johnson Vaughan – 1910 The mathematician is best known for her work on the SCOUT Launch Vehicle Program for NASA. The film Hidden Figures features Vaughn along with several other African American Women who worked for NASA. Ruth Richard – 1928 The left-hander played eight seasons in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. The stellar catcher also played in exhibition games in South and Central America.
