Coles Vegemite and Cheese Hot Cross Buns: Aussie delivers brutally honest review | 7NEWS

Never mind that we’ve just dispensed with Christmas and it’s only a few days into the new year.As retailers already prepare for Easter, an Aussie TikToker has delivered a brutal blow to Coles supermarket’s much-anticipated seasonal snack – the Vegemite and cheese hot cross bun.WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Man’s brutal review of the vegemite & cheese hot cross bunFor more Food related news and videos check out Food >>Food critic Russ.eats took to the social media platform to give an expletive-filled review, describing the Easter treat as “f****** bland” – but suggesting one scenario in which it could be the perfect snack.Russ begins the video by explaining he doesn’t have “high hopes” for the Aussie-style bun.“Number one, they just sound f*****,” he said, adding that he thought Bega overused the Vegemite name.“Ever since they bought the brand back in 2017 they have slapped the name on f****** everything.“They’re doing what Disney did when they bought Star Wars, they bring out p***-weak products and (put their name on them).“And in my opinion, it’s kind of de-valuing the Vegemite brand,” Russ said.Despite the review’s negative start, Russ says he’s keen to try the Easter item, saying it could be the cheaper “equivalent of the cheesy-mite scroll”.The critic then refers to Coles’ classic cheese and bacon rolls, which he believes are a “delicacy” despite being the cheaper equivalent of the “upper class” Bakers Delight rolls. But as his caption reads, the everyday cheese and bacon rolls are only a delicacy “when camping”.“These got me through a f****** Splendour in the Grass, just six of these, about two cans of V and chips on a stick,” he says.He hopes the new Vegemite and cheese hot cross buns could also be a delicacy.“I’ve always said we need the Cheesy-mite equivalent and maybe this is it,” he said.Pulling out the Vegemite and cheese hot cross bun, Russ is ready to begin the feast.“It’s kind of a Vegemite cross,” he says, before describing the item.“So it’s soft buns infused with parmesan and Vegemite and cheese on top.”He tries the hot cross bun two ways – straight out of the packet, plain and cold, and also warm with butter.“It says 20 seconds in the microwave and a bit of butter is the best way to go about it,” Russ said.As for Russ’ review?“Exactly what I expected,” he said.“Just like the cheese and bacon rolls, but without the bacon of course, and you get a yeasty Vegemite taste.“Pretty f****** bland, it’s like a real processed, typical bread roll taste and it could definitely do with more cheese.”There is some positive news though.Russ gives the Aussie-style hot cross bun a 10 out of 10 – but only if you’re camping.Coles told 7Life the buns have been a huge hit since their introduction in December 2021.“The limited-edition Coles Vegemite Hot Cross Buns … had proven a massive hit with … customers, with the mitey-flavoured buns selling out just weeks after arriving in stores for the first time last December,” the retail giant said in a statement. For more engaging lifestyle content, visit 7Life on Facebook.Your cookie settings are preventing this third party content from displaying. If you’d like to view this content, please adjust your Cookie Settings. To find out more about how we use cookies, please see our Cookie Guide.
